Brisbane home-grown lads Bonka (Lachlan Norton and Connor O’Neill) have taken the world by storm in recent years, becoming well-known as mashup lords with tracks that have reached no#1 on charts world-wide! And now they’re about to do a massive tour of Australia, kicking off next weekend in their home town of Brisbane.
Even with the tour pending and huge tracks on the horizon, the boys still took a few moments to sit down with OzClubbers to chat.
Hey Lachlan & Connor. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us again here at OzClubbers!
You’ve been likened to other great artists such as The Chainsmokers, Timmy Trumpet, Deorro, Tommy Trash, and TJR. How does it feel to be Brisbane local lads that have earned such a massive reputation?
It’s quite surreal to be honest with you, it is hard to imagine the biggest names of the industry listening to our music! It is certainly humbling but also a big motivator for us, definitely keeps us striving to keep producing quality music and playing bigger and better shows so that one day we might be considered one of those “great artists”
You’ve just been signed to Robbins Entertainment, who have worked with the likes of Yolanda Be Cool and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. Can you tell us how this came about?
The guys actually came to us, via Instagram of all places. They reached out after they heard our last single focus and got in contact with hoping to handle some future releases for us over in North America and the surrounding regions. We were super grateful for them even considering us and have since been blown away by the amount of work they have put in and the result we have achieved together!
Last we spoke, you named some of your favourite guests on your weekly show “Let’s Go Bonkas” as Timmy Trumpet, Mash’d N Kutcher, Tenzin, Stafford Brothers, and Benibee. That was over a year ago, who would you say have been standout favourites on the show since then?
We have had some amazing artists, such as DJ’s From Mars, Krunk and many others but our favourite episode is actually our live set recording from our show at Eatons hill NYD foam party! It brings back so many memories when listening to it and still to this day give us goosebumps every time we hear it!
You’ve got a massive tour about to start, kicking off at Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane. How does it feel to be back home in Brisbane to start the tour?
Well, it’s always a pleasure to play at home, the crowd is always so energetic and it’s really a privilege to be from Brisbane and get to play here so often because there really isn’t too many places in the world that beat it! But aside from that, the tour is a monster, the biggest we have done! Full credit has to go to our team at Catch Management who put it together, a lot of blood sweat and tears went into it and we are really reaping the fruits of their tireless labour!
You’ve played some wild and unhinged gigs in your time. Can you name one or two standout ones and why?
Well, this is a tough one because we have played soo many gigs that are memorable, but our standouts are we played a college festival in India recently, and the show was amazing super fun and they were up for anything. At its peak, Con went for a crowd surf, only problem is they didn’t want to give him back or let him down so I (Lachlan) was just watching him sail across the crowd of thousands of people, front to the back left to the right and all I could do was wave at him as the crowd has their way with him! The second most memorable gig which isn’t a good memory but still a standout. We were playing a show in Brisbane at Eatons Hill for one of our “PROJECT BONKA” shows and we had fireworks rigged to go off at particular moments during the set, so as we played and one of those moments approached we didn’t realise the fireworks were pointed in the wrong direction. So “BANG’ and these rockets and all these flames are flying all over the stage, up in our faces and from behind us. So had some burn marks and holes in our clothes, some missing eyebrows and a near-death experience 😉
Can you tell us a bit why you guys created “Bonka”?
We started bonka on a whim really, we were playing house parties back in the day and one party we were both attending one of us was djing and the other just enjoying themselves. After the party we met up and we just decided that the next party we went to we would play together, and ever since then we have always played together and haven’t looked back!
There are so many great upcoming artists out there at the moment, can you drop the names of a few that our readers should check out?
You’re not wrong, there are loads of up and coming exciting artists in and around Australia, but to name a few, Jacknife from the sunny coast (BIG FAN!), B.O.M from Sydney, Moss from Brisbane! (Going to be a monster, our tip) and Kaitlyn from the Gold Coast because she’s great at what she does and she’s just killing it at the moment to be honest!
Lastly, what’s coming up for Bonka in the next 12 months?
MUSIC and more MUSIC! We are going to be smashing out as many tunes as possible trying to grow our brand in the overseas markets particularly throughout ASIA! Apart from that just looking forward to playing as many shows as humanly possible, and making some more wild memories!
Thanks guys for chatting with us, and good luck with the tour!
