Guernicas 10th Bday Weekend!
31 October @ 19:00 - 05:00 AEDT
A Decade of Dance and Debauchery
@ Guerns Thursday 31/10
The 10th birthday weekend begins with New Guernica’s weekly Thursday night rave ritual!
We could tell you about the history of Guerns last 10, but we figure everyone who has spent nights with us has their own memories. So we thought we’d prefer to introduce the people we have hand picked to represent us for this historic occasion!
We opened our doors to the public as New Guernica in 2009. Lady Noir was the very first DJ to play behind our battered up organ on that evening and it gives us the wauzzies that she’s accepted our invitation to be the first to play when the doors open on the same date a decade later!
The same goes for everyone playing our 10th Birthday extravaganza. All have played an integral part and contributed to New Guernica, carving our identity within the Melbourne dance music community and now referred to as an institution.
For example, Pjenne hasn’t always been a siq dj. For the first few years, she was the friendly face you’d meet at the door when you reached the front of the Guerns queue. Pjenne returns alongside, Wax’o Paradiso chef Simon TK. We met a young Simon TK in our previous club life, well before Guernica existed. He was a part of Guerns from its early days and over the last few years has been involved in running Club D’ranged, arguably one of Melbourne’s best parties.
Like Pjenne, many on this line up have contributed to Guernica in multiple ways. There’s Tom Pollard, our first in-house booker. There’s Daniel Caswell aka Jean Pierre, who (when not djing) would be our go-to sound guy for live acts and often showed up to help at the drop of a hat. He’ll join long time resident DJ and cook, Mu-gen, “the great all rounder”. Mu-gen would nail sets through the main room, side room and Chuckle Park and then jump in the kitchen to perfect our meatballs and pizza bases too.
Then there’s NG icon, Post Percy, who needs no introduction and has been with us from day dot! Not only introducing ‘Dance Technique’, to our weekly Thursday for many years but more importantly, giving so many with talent the opportunity to play their first gig. Needless to say, we couldn’t have done it without him and of course he’s back for the 10th birthday.
Post Percy will be playing back to back with Mike Sydney aka Bongmist! Ok – Legit. Guerns would not exist if it weren’t for Michael Delany. Michael used to own and run a couple of the most influential nightclubs in Melbourne. Not only did a couple of the Guernica owners meet and work in Michael’s clubs but almost everybody on this line up, first met while partying or djing at Honkytonks & Third Class. The influence Michael has had on us growing up in his venues is ridic. Eternally grateful. Thanking Mike coming down from Sydney for this one!
Harold (Steeplejack) will be flying back from Darwin to join us. Harold, the other half of Club D’ranged and Pleasure Planet chief, made the Kitchen side room his home and we would not have stamped the night “a weekly rave ritual” if it weren’t for him.
Matt Coventry was in that kitchen before Harold and Matt used to play our weekly “Techno Monday nights” in Guerns’ early days. Yep, you read right, a weekly techno Monday night, which is where you’d find Luke Coleman 10 years ago and guess what? You’ll find him back in the same spot 10 years later! 🙂
Another two, who need no introduction – DJ Kiti who has been a member of our family for 15 years now, and also our brother, one of the Animals Dancing bawses, Andee Frost.
Also part of the Animals dancing crew are the boys from Otologic. They ran their own nights at New Guernica a few years back and also helped behind the scene (who’d forget the famed Lil Louis fiasco). We are proud to have them join us as well.
Did you know, Pelvis, used to be known as Nu Balance and played Guerns weekly in the early days, along side Awesome Wales! More recently they’ve run record labels and record stores but are back for the birthday. In the same breath, there’s Mandate who also used to share the weekly booth time with them and are getting the band back together for another show! Pure energy!! Also getting the band back together are Jake & Nikki, who had their fingers in most of our (DJ) slots – of which only they had the record collection to play any time slot and any style!
Dog Money & Organ Freeman are a couple of the Guerns owners. Organ Freeman (Steve) used to own the club which existed in the space where New Guernica resides now. He welcomed his new partners & the New Guernica concept on board back in 2009, with open arms. You think 10 years if a long time? This guy has been here for almost 20! That’s like 60 in club years!
Finally, it would be rude not to include the President Press crew who have been helping steer Thursdays in the wonky direction it deserves to go in for the last couple of years…
There is a story with everyone who’s playing at our birthday party and while we can go on and on. Wish we could’ve organised more lovely peeps to play but there’s only so many hours in weekend.
Last but not least, we want to thank YOU! You are the reason we still exist! <3
On Thursday 31st of October, come get loose to these wonderful characters and our twisted history for yourself, as we celebrate New Guernica turning 10!
Let the NG X birthday celebrations begin!
Chuckle Park from 7pm. Free before 11pm.
