15 years on, Oliver Lieb drops debut L.S.G album – Double Vision

    OzClubbers

Without question one of the foremost influences on electronic music production over the last three decades, this month marks Oliver Lieb’s return as L.S.G. Having lit the path with his remixed/re-mastered/re-released ‘Netherworld’ (“one of the most iconic trance and progressive singles in existence” – Dancing Astronaut) last month, August sees the German legend drop his first official studio long-player in 15 years. Something of an album recluse since 2002’s ‘The Hive’, as it’s title infers ‘Double Vision’ is a graphic, sonic demonstration of the two divergent halves of Lieb’s musical psyche.

A past-master in doing ‘different’ (and well before it became established practice), this album puts into the sharpest of perspectives the two poles-apart sides of Oliver Lieb’s musical mind. It’s out on August 14th and available to pre-order now here: https://www.beatport.com/release/double-vision/2074010

    L.S.G.

Throughout its frontend, the album cruises & arcs through a world of coolly glacial grooves, zephyr-ish melodies and epic soundscapes, all bound together with the mellowest of drama. The second half sees him shift focus to the clubfloor, supplying ‘Double Vision’ with drum punch and floor verve through its eleven 4/4-based killers.

‘Seven Worlds’, which raises ‘Double Vision’s curtain is a beat-less slice to appetite-whetting/scene-setting ambient overture. Through ‘Escape The Gravity’, downtempo kick-drums arrive, quickly followed by an epic 10 minutes of bass & breaks driven culture in the form of ‘Vapor’. Alongside its 8-bit bleeps, breaks also lie at the heart of ‘Spotter’, before the album becomes deeper and more pacific with ‘Passion’. Matters take a turn for the galactic as ‘Suborbital’ lifts it up, while the live-sounding hi-hats and all-round twisted dynamism of ‘Tipsy Flower’ bring a distinctly eclectic edge to it. ‘Perfect Blue’, which closes out ‘Double Vision’s first act, summons Blade Runner-ish imagery, before its slowed-up drum ‘n’ bass rhythms, squelchy FX and cursive synths wrestle control.

From the warped pitch of its very first synth, ‘Domino’ lets you know you’ve arrived on different sonic ground. On CD2 Oliver begins to flex more floor muscle, as the pressing shuffle of percussion and 4/4 timecodes resonate. ‘Whiteout’ brings the album a contemporary edge, full of swiLSG-DoubleVision copy

rling harmonic pads and subtly gated synthery. ‘Cepheid’ and ‘Freakwaves’ are tech-touched cuts both, with their recursive beats, entrancing FX elements and nagging synths, all awash with an gothic ether. ‘Little Wing’ offers a brief ambient interval, which segues into the fascinatingly dystopian ‘Aviation’. ‘Colours Of Noise’ provides a master class in synth serration and measured distortion, while ‘Your Love’ comes fully equipped with beautifully defined bass, reverb-heavy percs and FX-frayed vocal intrigue.

‘When It’s Dark Outside’ is a fantastic display of proggy tech, doomy LFO and percussive hiss, countered by measured harmonics. ‘Input’ meanwhile arcs to the stratosphere. Showcasing some expert modulation, it’s backed by its scudding, stormy beats. The epic ‘Supercycle’ rounds up this extraordinary album with a deep groove, stabbed synths and next-level FX, all driven by potent drum resource.

Despite the hectic tour schedule, his weekly A State Of Trance radio show and all preparations for his unique Gaia show during Amsterdam Dance Event next week, Armin van Buuren hasn’t been sitting still in the studio. Today, the Grammy-nominated, globally renowned artist unleashed a brand-new single called ‘Wild Wild Son’, released on Amsterdam-based record label Armada Music.

Armin van Buuren: “Many people ask me what songs of mine I’m most proud of. All tracks are my babies, but some tracks I just have more of a connection with, simply because of the time I spent on it or the emotion attached to it. In this case, ‘Wild Wild Son’ is about Sam Martin’s (then unborn) son. I fell so much in love with the song because I recognize the love I feel for my own son. I also really went the extra mile with the production, recording real drums (Koen) and real strings. It was almost a year in the making. It’s a little different from my previous work and a big step for me personally.”

Helmed by sublime piano chords and wonderful, guiding vocals, ‘Wild Wild Son’ sees Armin van Buuren go down the cross-genre road to come up with an absolute masterpiece. Moving, hopeful and honest, it features the vocals of singer-songwriter Sam Martin, who worked with David Guetta on international hits such as ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Lovers On The Sun’. The release of the single, which coincides with the launch of a phenomenal official music video, also bears an empowering message; the song was written by Sam Martin as a message to his unborn son, encouraging him to follow his heart and dreams, and run free.

      DJ SPEN:
US house icon DJ Spen first laid his hand on the decks at the age of thirteen while growing up in his native city of Baltimore - he hasn’t looked back since.
Also known as Sean Spencer, the talented DJ and producer began his illustrious career in the mid-’80s as a hip-hop radio DJ making beats under the moniker Numarx, responsible for writing and recording 'Girl You Know It’s True,' later covered and made into a smash hit by Milli Vanilli. The years that followed saw DJ Spen move away from hip-hop and towards the classic Chicago house sound that would define his productions for years to come, after joining forces with famed production collective The Basement Boys. Working under the name Jasper Street Co., DJ Spen released his first 12″ through Basement Boys Records in 1995, the energetic gospel house cut ‘A Feeling.’ This was the first in a lauded series of releases for the label that brought Spen commercial and dancefloor success over the next decade, earning him international recognition as a house music pioneer.  In 2004, DJ Spen split from Basement Boys, releasing through Black Vinyl Records and his own label Code Red before founding his second imprint Quantize Recordings, which has since become a regular outlet for his music. Alongside his own productions, DJ Spen has built a reputation as a talented and prolific remix artist, putting his own unique stamp on pop anthems from Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Everything but the Girl, Toni Braxton and more. If that isn’t enough, he’s still spinning eclectic and soulful jams in clubs across the globe, further establishing his status as an eminent figure in house music, both past and present.

      DR PACKER:
Dr Packer is an alias of West Australian DJ/Producer Greg Packer, set up for Remixes & Edits of mainly retro music such as 70’s, 80’s, 90’s Soul, Disco, Funk, Hip Hop & Reggae. Greg although known more for ‘Liquid Drum & Bass’ regularly plays sets of ‘Old School Funk, Disco & Hip Hop. Greg purchased his first record in 1982 at the age of 10. That record was ‘Grandmaster Flash – The Message’! Greg grew up in Northampton in the UK, frequently listening to his mother’s disco records (to which he says he had no choice!). In the 70’s it wasn’t uncommon to hear music such as ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’ or ‘And The Beat Goes On’ played in the house, so the disco thing really was his first introduction to music, records became his life and he has collected 25,000+ over the years.  Dr Packer has quickly become a mainstay in the sets of some of the biggest names in the disco world with the likes of Greg Wilson, Hot Toddy, Fingerman, Joey Negro and Norman Jay regularly featuring his edits in their performances. All of this support helped Dr Packer to be voted #1 in the Traxsource Top 20 Nu Disco Artists midway through 2015. At the end of the year Dr Packer came in at #4 in the Top 100 Disco Artists

Although being new to the game, up and coming Sydney DJ, producer and vocalist XMPLA has caught the attention of the global music community. Xmpla creates a truly unique style, combining dynamic electronic production with elements of hip hop, whilst manipulating and layering various vocal treatments, all of which are his own. His compelling new single ‘sun goes down’ maintains his unique production aesthetic, whilst exploring a more traditional song writing structure.

“I wrote most of this song, late at night, in bed, with the mic on my iPod headphones and the laptop. It represents what goes on in my head when the sun goes down. After a long day, the fears and doubts creeps in, the sounds and songs become stuck on repeat.” - XMPLA

After winning the 301 studios ‘is it a banger’ competition and receiving runner up in the yourshot DJ competition, XMPLA signed with tinted records for the release of ‘better’. The track caught the attention of triple j unearthed, as well as numerous triple j presenters and various dance radio across the country, for its ground-breaking and futuristic production stylings. Further to his originals, XMPLA has remixed for local legends, odd mob and animal feelings, and most notably, on official remix duties for Marshmello and Selena Gomez on their international hit ‘wolves’. More recently XMPLA debuted his live show supporting hippie sabotage at oxford art factory, blowing the crowd away with the plethora of vocal personalities within ‘better’.

Tez Cadey is a French producer and DJ that creates an assortment of melodic and proudly authentic music. After releasing a diverse range of work over the years, Tez drops the third single this year in anticipation of his forthcoming Lizard Days LP.This accumulation of singles ends with Logic, an accessible house tune that builds gradually to the eventual climax.

Tez Cadey is self-confessed music geek, that holds a more reserved personality than the stereotypical DJ. Whilst drawing influences from personal favourites in the field, Avicii and Kygo, Tez carefully constructs a reputation as a talented improvisational DJ that can spin a set on demand, with any given theme.

Within this year’s body of work, Tez Cadey dropped two heavy vocal singles - Rivers featuring artist Brodie Barclay and the Flying Illusion single that boasts songstress Ming.  Earlier in his musical career, Tez Cadey’s Seve reached upwards of 800M streams worldwide and has been certified 16x diamond internationally. The track also garnered huge support in the notoriously hard to break market of China. Not far behind is another prevalent tropical house leaning anthem that features Julia Church’s reminiscent tinged vocals, Walls (Summer Mix).

Embracing multiple measured swells, Logic is a solid single that evolves into a mesmerising but minimalistic club roller. Keeping it simplistic and sophisticated, Tez Cadey’s infectious synth melodies continue to make waves of excitement as we head into the latter part of 2018 with his exciting Lizard Days LP set to release on 2nd November.
