    Artist Interview - BONKA

    648263484_bonkapic.thumb.png.d9100b2ec855f5c0919499b2aa2c464f.png
    Artist: Bonka
    Label: Catch

The notorious mash up kings debut original “Can’t Stop” made it to the iTunes Top 10 and their follow up track “Like This” reached an epic #5 on the ARIA Club Charts and #6 on the Big Room Beatport Charts. They went on to release the single “Killa” which hit #2 in the ARIA Club Charts. In addition to a monthly radio show “Let’s Go Bonka’s” the boys have just started a fully loaded Australian tour with Europe dates to be announced.

I recently caught up with local Brissy boys Lachlan and Connor and got the chance to ask them about clubbing, mashups and what they think about our local scene.

Where abouts in Queensland are you guys from?

We are both from Brisbane originally.

Can you tell us about what got you into electronic music?

The thing that first got us into electronic music was probably hearing it for the first time; it was energy that it gives you that you can’t get from other types of music. To this day when a song comes on that we haven’t heard before and you get goose bumps it gets us excited to play it to a crowd and we get to see more people with the same feeling from it that we got.

You’re known for your mashup wars – what got you into doing mashup’s and why do you think it’s so popular?

Mashups are great especially for us because we have really short attention spans haha! We started making little mashups ect when we were just learning the basics in music production, and seeing as we love lots of different types of music. By putting as many different genres of music with as many different vocals both new and old it keeps not only ourselves but our crowds entertained and constantly getting things they don’t expect.

When was the last time you went clubbing in Qld and what do you think about the scene here as opposed to overseas?

The scene in Australia is amazing! The last time we went clubbing here was for our PROJECT BONKA show at Eaton’s hill a few weeks ago and that was absolutely insane! watch it here  To compare our home clubbing scene to the emerging Asian dance music scene for example. Its not better or worse its just different as the emphasis is more on the performance and the entertainment value you bring as opposed to your brand or music that you have released.
Tell us about why you decided to start your monthly show “Let’s Go Bonka’s”

Lets Go Bonkas is our way of showcasing to our fans what music we are really digging at the moment, it combines all different genres in a high energy mix that our fans can listen to whenever they want, but people usually listen when they are at the gym/ pre drinks/ on the way to work in the moring ect.

Which guest/s have you enjoyed most on the show?

Every guest mix we have on the show brings their own individuality to the show, but our favorite guests would have to be Timmy Trumpet, Mashd N Kutcher, Tenzin, The Stafford brothers and Benibee. As we love the music they play regardless and we are just fortunate enough that they would be a part of our podcast!

What’s the No.1 piece of advice you’d give up & coming DJ’s/producers that see what you’re doing and want the same for themselves?

Be unique, do your own thing, as that’s the only way to differentiate yourselves in such a competitive industry, which may mean the music you play or the way you play it! As long as you work hard and keep pushing yourself toward your goal there is literally nothing that anyone cant achieve!

Multi-platinum, award-winning, Finnish Trance DJ/Producer, Ville Virtanen AKA Darude is behind one of the world’s biggest and most iconic Dance tracks ‘Sandstorm’.

He’s won 3 Finnish Grammy Awards and released 4 critically acclaimed albums with his last album ‘Moments’ coming out via Warner Music.

Each year he plays hundreds of club and festival shows around the world including two visits to Australia last year.

One of the most successful Finnish artists ever, his music has had a global reach most artists can only dream of.

In terms of pivotal dance music moments, for many people, Sandstorm was one, and was the track that opened the doors of club music to them.

The influence of this track has been felt not just by fans but also other electronic artists.

On his infamous coffee run Deadmau5 surprised us all by crediting Darude with bringing electronic music to Canada.

“You and a select few were responsible for the influx of electronic music into North America" He says.

"It was the first time electronic music became less underground and cool, there wasn’t anything before that”.

Today, the renowned Finnish producer has a new single ‘HIDE’ and has just represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

The new release brings in fellow Finn, progressive house and trance producer, Audioventura and features Aussie vocalist JVMIE who nails the trance vocal on the track.

Featuring a familiar emotional and uplifting sound, this is a second collaboration with Jamie Lee Wilson, after last year's progressive trance collaboration on “Timeless”.
When I spoke to Ville last week, he was fresh up from a night of partying on the eve of Eurovision 2019, and was soaking up the relaxed and liberal vibe of Tel Aviv.

I asked about his new music and if he thought of himself as a trance artist.
“I don’t mind if people call me a trance artist or trance dj, its not wrong" he says.
"My musical background and influences are in rock, and I listen to punk and metal. I like music that moves me and has energy.

"I’ve done housey stuff, but I’m leaning back to trance.

"I don’t like to put stuff in boxes and what ever comes out, comes out”.

In terms of the Eurovision gig, he didn’t say yes straight away, due to the amount of work involved but ultimately decided he couldn't pass up representing Finland.

When asked what it feels like to be the first DJ ever to be asked to do Eurovision he humbly says “It’s the biggest honour ever”.

Since his arrival on the world stage in 1999, Darude's iconic music has been used in Euro 2000, Wimbledon, The Olympics, NFL, NBA and the UFC.

He’s featured everywhere from Hollywood movies to advertising videos for Nike and PlayStation, and in video games like DJ Hero and Angry Birds.

His musical reach continues to cross boundaries and break down barriers and he continues to be one of dance music’s most influential artists.

In a most welcome manifestation of the gradual societal and industry change regarding equality, this morning ARIA released the weekly club chart, topped by Sydney producer Beth Yen; the first solo female artist to achieve #1 since 2012. Also making her the fourth solo female artist to achieve this in ARIA chart history, following on from Helena with ‘Girl From The Sky’ - topping the chart for two consecutive weeks, and two other Australian females, Zoe Badwi with ‘Release Me’, and Sarah McCleod with ‘He Doesn’t Love You'.

Not only competing with local producers for the top position, Beth Yen knocked an international artist off the top spot - arguably the most prolific producer of the last few years, Scottish superstar Calvin Harris with his hit single ‘Giant feat. Rag'n'Bone Man’. Only a few weeks out from the original release, Beth Yen’s single ‘Ocean’ debuted at #25, jumping up the chart with a stellar remix pack from Friendless, Buried King, Marcus Knight, Scott Diaz, and Ozclubbers' own @Adam Madd, reaching #1 today, and in turn making the history books.

In one of the most serendipitous of occasions, the single was released by Hot Sunday Records just four weeks ago, on International Women’s Day. A shining example of the renowned Sydney’s DJ catalogue, Beth has taken inspiration from her years spent living and working as a DJ in Ibiza. For the release of ‘Ocean’, collaborating with Australian lyricist The Baroness, a regular vocalist of live shows with Peking Duk, and previously Flight Facilities. The song itself is about the ups and downs and life, and how people can draw you in and out much like the ocean. It is a rare find for dance music to be written with so much meaning and purpose, which has evidently resonated with her peers all across the country.

In what is hopefully a sign of the changing times, Beth shared a message of encouragement to her peers, “This is not just a win for me but a win for LGBTIQ+ women and men in the dance music industry. I hope that this inspires anyone, especially women contemplating getting involved in electronic dance music to get out there and find a way just to do it. The music industry is listening and ready for you all.”

Having grown up in the UK, Beth Yen cut her teeth rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s most influential DJs, from the likes of Masters at Work, Dennis Ferrer and Eric Prydz. From the humble underground clubs,  and later progressing to big room shows for Pacha Ibiza, London’s Egg, Sunset Music Festival alongside Avicii, and Sydney’s most prestigious Mardi Gras festival. Always with a finger on the pulse, Beth has produced originals across facets of house, funky, tech and nu-disco, with a genuine passion that is guaranteed to bring her more success stories such as this in the years to come.
