    Beatport introduces Afro house category

    OzClubbers

Beatport has spent 2017 working to ensure that its genre categories correctly reflect the music displayed under them. The company has introduced four new categories over the course of the year and is closing out 2017 with a fifth: Afro house.

The addition of this new genre reflects the organic instrumentation and African rhythms influencing the modern house music scene, pioneered by South African artists like Black Coffee and Culoe De Song.

In a press release, Beatport chief product officer Terry Weerasinghe says the Afro house sound is “stronger than ever” on dance floors around the world.

“We’ve focused this year on building the best possible store experience for DJs, which makes it the right time to add this thriving genre to Beatport,” Weerasinghe says. “In order to do it right, we’ve collaborated closely with the labels and artists at the forefront of the movement. Our dedicated team will curate the best Afro house tracks every week, and spotlight the artists you need to know about.”

The Afro house page is live on Beatport now and can be found here.

Fast-rising DJ/producer SKIY has brought her slick style of house to Oliver Helden’s widely respected Heldeep Records. Who Got The Keys is certain to cause a splash throughout the industry and has already received big support with its club friendly tech and underground house inspired vibe.

Marking a move into club focused territory for the young DJ/producer, Who Got The Keys is booming with high-octane beats, bouncing basslines and infectious vocal samples, marking the next step in SKIY’s rocketing career. The single has already picked up strong support from tastemakers including The Magician, EDX, Robin Schulz, Chocolate Puma, Dillon Francis, The Chainsmokers, Sam Feldt, Don Diablo, David Guetta, and Martin Garrix. Instantly catchy and impossible not to dance to, Who Got The Keys is set for wide-spread success in the club, on the radio and online.

Since making her production debut in 2017, SKIY has quickly established herself as a must-watch artist. Considering SKIY experienced a rich musical upbringing surrounded by different kinds of music – her mother was a jazz singer while SKIY herself is a trained pianist – this quest for new sounds is hardly surprising. With her roots lying in Brazil, Croatia and Germany she’s developed an interest in club-music from a young age, with wide-ranging influences.

With Oliver Heldens’ seal of approval, Who Got The Keys is set to do big things and proves just how versatile SKIY is as an artist. Expect big things from SKIY in the future.

For the past couple of years DJ Mag has used Top 100 DJs data to calculate and reflect the international popularity of DJs from the house and techno scenes.

With the continuing commercial dominance of EDM, these genres have been on the periphery of the global poll in recent years, despite commanding huge audiences worldwide.
Now, for the first time, this poll is co-presented by Beatport, integrating sales trend data alongside votes from DJ Mag fans to create the Alternative Top 100 DJs chart — a way to recognise the incredible popularity of these scenes.

Somersault’s music is uncompromising. Heavily influenced by the shuffling rhythms of dark UK garage, atmospheric techno and deep melodic house, Somersault straddles the line between the delirious highs and murky lows, a sound that’s brought his unique sets to some of the most respected outdoor festivals and underground clubs across Australia.
The talented producer has come a long way from session guitarist to forging a signature brand of house, progressive and techno, receiving support from Be Svendsen, Felix Da Housecat, LTJ Bukem, Urmet K, Joseph Capriati, Joris Voorn, Laurent Garnier, Eelke Kleijn, Cid Inc, Max Graham, Oliver Schories, Armin van Buuren... the list goes on and on.
These releases call home a compelling list of Australian labels: Bassic Records, Open Records, Upon Access, Subsonic Music, Ugenius, an impending EP on Unknown Records and imminent second EP on Bassic with a corresponding National Tour.
