Move over Fyre Festival, a new disaster event has landed

    Guest

You would think that after the monumental shitfight that was Fyre Festival 2017, dodgy promoters would be slightly deterred from trying to follow suit — but apparently not.

The latest Fyre-esque disaster has landed today in the form of The Gathering festival in South Carolina. The festival, which was being put on by little-known promoters EDM United Events, had apparently locked in established acts such as ATliens, Leah Culver, Ralph Louie and a stack more to play at their inaugural event a few days ago in the town of St George.

According to the poster, The Gathering promised to bring “four themed stages of sound”, “twenty amazing DJs,” and “50,000 watts of sound”. United Events also promised “amazing lighting that will melt your face, visuals that will blow your mind, an oxygen bar, food vendors, fire dancers, and a beer cave.” Hell, they even claimed to be providing breakfast for everyone.

According to their Eventbrite page, tickets for the event ranged from $10 to $145 — with a strict no refund policy (I wonder why.)

There was plenty of hype on social media for it, with a number of the billed DJs urging their fans to buy tickets. Up until a few days before the event, United Events main man Andrew Murdock was still promoting it. But the grand illusion unraveled when punters rocked up to the festival grounds and found…this:

    new fyre festival the gathering

According to a post on the Facebook page EDM Confessions, that bunch of ply wood was apparently the “main stage.” But wait, there’s more:

That was one of the other four “themed stages of sound” that Murdock had promised — presumably the theme was “shitty”.

Even more bizarrely, it emerged that some of the the booked DJs actually had to build the stages themselves. “I didn’t get paid for DJing or setting up,” said DJ Josh Ware. “Me and like four or five dudes are the only reason anyone had a stage to even play on. I’m giving him until Friday to pay me.  I don’t want my money from anyone else but Andrew or his wife.”

This was backed up by a number of comments on furious Facebook posts that were being shared around:

Headiner Atliens were as clueless as anyone else, posting on Facebook: “We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into…”

At the time of writing, Murdock’s/United Events’ Twitter is still online — although hasn’t tweeted since before the event — but their official Facebook page has been completely deleted. There’s also no word on whether any of the artists were paid, or whether anyone will be taking legal action — let alone where the hell Andrew Murdock is.

But we have a feeling this won’t be the last we hear about it.

Well, here is a new mix from me: something compiled, executed and delivered, just because...

Since we kicked off our  Hello guest! Please register or sign in to view the hidden content.  project last year; the vast majority of my DJ'ing has been centred around a housier, disco-centric sound—for which Attic is known—for both, our own events and other ad hoc DJ bookings in around town.

Of course, we love our Attic sound, however; during this last little while—somewhat regrettably—I've not had much of an opportunity to sit back and relish in some other musical guilty pleasures. This particular line-up of deeper, melodic selections has allowed me to do just that. This is a very much an indulgent mix—let's make no mistake about that.

Within, you'll hear some newer pieces; you'll hear some that I had stashed away for such an opportunity. Each track has moved me or has made me feel something.

It's melodic, it's moody and if I've done my job correctly; you'll be taken on a journey for next 80 minutes or so.

I really hope you dig this one.

With the success of his new sound in his Get It Started EP Alex Preston continues to take us on a glorious journey of infectious grooves and driving beats in his new Friday Night EP, out now on Basement Sound.

Alex kicks off the EP with title track Friday Night, a bass stomping gem that features Alex Preston’s organic guitar riffs and vocal chops that make for the ideal disco-tinged jam. Next up is Hip Shakin’ Mumma, (that will find you shaking your hips for sure) with its playful key stabs, soaring strings and guitar solos that are accompanied by a toe-tapping vocal. Drawing the sun-soaked EP to a close is Don’t You Mind featuring a jacking guitar lead and shuffling beats making the Friday Night EP the perfect soundtrack to your funk-filled night out.

Speaking on the release Alex tells us: “I’m really stoked with how my “Friday Night” EP turned out. When I was putting the EP together, I wanted to have 3 club tracks that embodied what I love about house music. I wanted each track to have a different feel but I also wanted to be able to play them in my live show and have them work together.”

Shut away in the studio for months, Alex Preston created his own style of disco infused underground house featuring his live guitar and percussion. Along with the sound re-invention, this year sees Alex Preston announce his new live show where elements used in his productions will make a live appearance to support his new style and releases. Expect live guitar licks, cosmic basslines and warm pulsating house beats as the multi-talented artist brings his productions to life. To celebrate the Friday Night EP release, Basement Sound will be hosting Alex's Friday EP Launch at their first “Basement Beach” party at Sydney’s iconic Manly Beach on the 27th July - Basement Beach 001 feat. Alex Preston (Live) at BRKLYN (Sugar Lounge Basement)!

Hackney Council in London's north has approved a controversial new licensing policy, enforcing curfews for all clubs and bars and pubs.

It rules that all new venues will automatically adhere to a strict curfew of 11pm on weekdays and 12am on weekends. To extend a license, the venue owners will have to prove that the extension won't cause any anti-social behaviour issues.

"This is a disgraceful decision and a shameful failure of elected officials to listen to the views of residents," said founder of the area's popular Street Feast Jonathan Downey. "It is disastrous for the life and vibrancy of Hackney nightlife. This is not over though and we will not be ignored."

Hackney has been consistently been recognised as a key area in London's nightlife, as its suburbs Shoreditch, Dalston, Hoxton and Hackney itself - to name but a few - are all associated with the younger adult generations' nightlife, as well as tourism within London. To kerb late opening -  for what many feel to be the paving of ways for the "watering down" of suburbs, has already gained much opposition with Shoreditch's high streets having been sold to megabrands and established nighclubs being forced to close.

“The French two-piece who are beginning to build a real name for themselves” - YOU
Thrown into the electronic and hip-hop music scene at a young age, Trinix’s musical journey has developed into a sweet revival of the 90’s originated genre: French Touch. New effort Otherside continues this pop tinged, riff filled musical restoration. The exploration hits us with a sense of Trinix’s mesmerising production skill, expertly refined over the years.
In 2017, the two young French producers released their Hide EP that reached an incredible 15 million streams. Having always received strong support from youtube tastemakers MrSuicideSheep and Chill Nation, Trinix continue to distil their various influences in a skilful and modern mix. They oscillate between electro chill, tropical house, nu-funk and future bass in the most sophisticated of ways.
To continue the ride, more recent releases like tropical house track Close to Me build suspense in anticipation for their upcoming album release. With a total of 75 million streams and rising, it’s safe to say fans are eagerly awaiting their next promised body of work, May Day.
As Trinix’s first ever album, May Day comes after 2 years of solid work from the pair. The boys tell us: "The major theme of the album is the Space which we find fascinating by its diversity and which we absolutely want to symbolize thanks to "Mayday". All the titles have been selected with great difficulty and doubt among more than 60 compositions, to obtain a coherent and representative rendering of our Music".
Ahead of the upcoming album release, this new single is composed with a seriously funky rhythm, formidable chopped vocals and the deliciously soulful voice of Opé Smith. Otherside transforms what you know to be pop-house and adds delectably emotive lyrics to Trinix’s clean cut and consistently seamless production.
