NP Exclusive Guest Mix: Rilla Force

    Ozclubbers Staff

If you’re into names like Mr. Carmack, montell2099, Trippy Turtle and more, then Rilla Force is right up your alley.

His self-coined ‘RNBDM’ sub-genre blends future bass, electronic, hip-hop and R&B elements into one infectious sound that is quickly gaining traction in the SoundCloud community. The Boston, Massachusetts native has been producing music for over 12 years, making him quite a novice when it comes to creating powerful tunes.

His future trap sound has been supported by numerous official Spotify playlists, Calvin Harris radio, NEST HQ and more. He’s performed in some of Boston’s premier music venues and as he looks forward to continuing to build relationships with other diverse artists, showcase his sound, and continuously give back to the music community, he frequently releases well-received singles.

We chat with Rilla Force about his exclusive guest mix, upbringing, influences and more. Check it out below.

Hey there, thanks for chatting with us today!

Big blessings, thanks for having me!

You’ve been producing for over a decade. How did you get into electronic music production?

To be honest, I kind of stumbled into it. Originally, I was making hip-hop exclusively. In 2011/2012 I got introduced to the Future Beats scene, Soulection and the many other electronic sub-genres.

Your self-coined ‘RNBDM’ sound is pretty distinct. Did you always know that’s the kind of sound you wanted to create?

I knew since I started producing I wanted to do more than just beat-making. I wanted to play instruments and sing as well. In college, I took a couple music theory courses and took time off making music to understand other genres. I slowly started to fall in love with jazz and I think that was the catalyst. In turn, I dove into electronic music while building a chemistry with jazz, neo-soul, and R&B.

Since you began your journey with music production, what have been some of your most exciting achievements?

Over the course of my music career, I’ve been traveling the world, producing for vocalists, quit my day job to pursue music full time and learning different instruments!

You release singles pretty frequently. How do you find yourself staying inspired? Are there any artists you frequently look to for inspiration?

I’m constantly listening new to music, Especially hybrid genres! Oh man, I love me some Sam Gellaitry, Monte Booker, Flying Lotus, Smino, Saba, No Name, Jorja Smith, Raven Lanae, T-Pain, Kendrick Lamar just to name a few.

Seven months ago, you announced that you quit your job to work on music full time. Looking back, are you happy you made that decision?

OF COURSE!!! I never thought I could live out my dreams and be so completely satisfied with my day-to-day life. Easily the best decision I’ve made to date.

You’ve adapted the phrase ‘Win Forever’ as your mantra. What does ‘Win Forever’ mean to you?

When I say ‘Win Forever,’ I say it as a motivator/ reminder for myself and everyone else that we all have the ability to be successful. I want to Win Forever and I want everyone to know that feeling. Taking the L is also VERY important and I’m definitely not implying that it’s not ok to lose either. Losing teaches you many things about yourself and your involvement in the world. Winning is just the validation of the goal you were trying to achieve.

You’re about to hit the 10k mark on SoundCloud. Anything you plan to do to celebrate?

Maybe an EP? Or a track? Cover art? Maybe nothing at all… it’ll be a surprise for sure!!

Finally, any big plans for 2018 and beyond?

Every year I set a goal. Last year, it was quit my day job. This time around I wanted to tour internationally, get some major placements, make it to US radio and play a festival. We’ll see what happens between now and the rest of the year!
