Review: CALVERT ‘This Beautiful Life, Vol. 1’

CALVERT describes his latest EP This Beautiful Life, Volume 1 as a true labour of love, and as cliché as it may be to say such things – you can really feel it on this release. Press play on any song from the EP and you will be presented with a slickly produced, amazingly arranged track with polished vocals and an infectious uplifting spirit. The music might be too “pop bubblegum” for some, but those who want an unadulterated, unapologetic pop sound will find themselves feeling right at home here.

“Please With a Cherry” and “This Beautiful Life” were both accompanied by music videos and to us they are clear highlights of the EP. The former is drenched in a fun, mischievous atmosphere with a chorus designed to a) get stuck in your head and b) compel you onto the dance floor. The latter has strong but simple melodies that evoke feelings of inspiration to the point where you will believe anything is possible.

On the flip side of the coin, the weakest track on the album by far is “Heartbeat”. This song is non-offensive meh. I wouldn’t go out of my way to turn it off but it almost comes across almost like a b-side when compared to the rest of the EP.

This Beautiful Life, Vol. 1 is well worth your time. Just don’t be surprised if you have his choruses in your head for the next week!
