  3. Amazon‘s AI personal assistant Alexa incited German authorities to action after reportedly throwing “her own party” in a Hamburg resident’s flat. The Alexa-enabled soirée began to play music at maximum volume at 1:50 AM. The noise exacerbated neighbors who called the police to register the disturbance. Police broke into the sixth-floor Hamburg flat, quieting Alexa at approximately 3:00 AM. Alexa’s owner, Oliver Haberstroh, has since shared news of the incident with Amazon, posting a complaint on Amazon’s German Facebook page. Haberstroh writes “Alexa managed on her own, without command and without me using my mobile to turn on at full volume and have her own party at my apartment. She decided to have it at a very inconvenient time, between 1.50am and 3.00am. My neighbours called the police” Enjoying an evening out during Alexa’s outburst, Haberstroh returned home to find a new lock on his door. Once Haberstroh visited a local police station, he received not only a new set of keys corresponding to the lock, but an invoice for the new lock as well. Amazon has worked with Haberstroh to determine that Alexa’s Echo feature was “remotely activated,” causing the volume to increase through Haberstroh’s “third party mobile music-streaming app.” Amazon maintains that Alexa’s cloud service “worked flawlessly,” with no malfunction, but has offered to pay Haberstroh’s invoice. 4. Home assistants are supposed to be at your beck and call, without room for error or – least of all – autonomous decision making. However, if we learned anything from I, Robot, it’s that you can never fully trust technology to do what it’s intended to. Police in Hamburg had to bust down the door of one Oliver Haberstroh, while he was out at a club, because Amazon’s Alexa home assistant had decided to, apparently of its own free will, blast music at full volume between 1:50 and 3 o’clock in the morning. Complaints from neighbors prompted the visit from police and, after there was no answer at the door, they broke it down. “Alexa independently, without command and without being controlled by my mobile phone, decided to celebrate her own party at full volume,” he wrote on Amazon’s Facebook page. Amazon suggested that it could have been prompted from a wake-word coming through an open window; however, Haberstroh lived on the sixth floor and no such open window was present. A PR agency told The Times that Amazon is “talking to the customer to understand the context of the incident.” Hopefully Haberstroh gets a year of Amazon Prime for free or something for his troubles.   H/T The Memo This article was first published on Your EDM. 5. Kanye West recently made his epic onstage return at Kid Cudi’s show show in Chicago after nearly a year hiatus — and apparently he’s been planning some big things during his downtime! Kanye’s own company Mascotte Holdings has reportedly filed a U.S. Trademark application for something called “Yeezy Sound.” With the catchy title on lock, the description reads “streaming of music, audio, images, video and other multimedia content over the internet, mobile devices, wireless networks and other computer networks and electronic communications networks.” Another of Kanye’s new trademarks is described as “retail stores, wholesale stores, mail order services, on-line ordering services and on-line retail store services, and retail store services available through computer communications and interactive television.” All of Yeezy’s four hopeful trademarks are currently filed under the “intent-to-use” phase. Nothing is off limits for Yeezy. He’s already conquered rapping, producing, and fashion ventures, and considering his fallout with Jay-Z and Tidal it would only make sense he’d tap into music streaming in his own way.   Source: XXL Mag This article was first published on Your EDM.
