  2. One of the Pioneers of the dance music world: Sister Bliss from Faithless, will be touching down in Sydney this December for the first time in 10 years. Currently playing in some of the world’s hottest clubs, Sister Bliss will excite her Aussie fans with an exclusive Faithless DJ set, but she's taken time out of her busy tour planning to chat with Ozclubbers' @GALLEON and @Adam Madd. You’ve been around music since you were 5, but what first drew you into the electronic music scene and what inspired you to start DJing? I think the otherworldly sounds of synthesisers and drum machines grabbed me in the 80's, and that morphed into what became acid house. The whole scene inspired me - I was collecting records, listening to pirate radio, going to warehouse parties and clubs, and couldn't get enough of this incredible new sound. I used to make mixtapes with my friend - all my 12's on one side, and all hers on the other -so I guess the natural progression was to start DJing. What can we expect from your sets in Australia this year? Will you be getting out some of the classics, focusing on new content or both? I'll be playing a mixture of pretty upfront music as well as some of the classics, and special edits of Faithless material - I have a weekly global radio show " Sister Bliss in Session " - and that really keeps me on top of new releases - I like to look forward musically, as there is so much great music out there, as well as bringing the crowd pleasers! You’ve been referred to as the “musical engine” of Faithless. What can you tell us about the process you go through when creating new tracks? Its never just one process - for me it could be anything from playing around with a chord sequence, to a melody, or vocal, to how the drums inspire me… every day is different - but I can't write without a good bass sound! Once the rough ideas are down, then its always a process of refining it, maybe working with a vocalist if it feels like it needs a vocal, sometimes playing with it for months! - and then eventually road testing it in my DJ sets. What's happening on the production front for you currently? We are working on a new Faithless album due to be released in 2019 so thats keeping me busy! How do you feel becoming a mother affected your music career? I think its mainly affected the amount of touring I've been able to do - I've been very lucky in that my son was able to travel with me on some DJ tours and with Faithless until he started school. Now, I've had to be more selective about when I can tour - if they are longer and don't work with school holidays it can be a logistic nightmare with childcare! i have to be very organised with my time which can be tough- for example having spent years in studios until 4am - which is sometimes when the creative juices flow - is just not feasible now. I think working mothers have a tough gig - especially when you're self employed - if you don't work there is no safety net whatsoever. I don't think people realise that within dance music or DJing as a career, there is no maternity pay, no sick pay, no pension - it can be pretty precarious, especially for those just starting out. If you had the power to change one thing in the electronic music scene, what would that be and why? I think awareness of the things I mentioned above is important - and recently there has been a bit more of a discussion around mental health which is helpful. This scene has become a way of life for so many people - and as an industry happens to generate a huge amount of money globally - so respect and support is needed for those in our industry - not just the superstar DJ's and artists but all those who make their job possible. What would be your most memorable gig to date? I've been very lucky to have had so many memorable gigs - most recently playing a festival in Sarajevo was very emotional for me - I'd never played there before - but before the show I was speaking to people about their experiences during the war when they were under siege - which was very powerful and humbling. There were also bullet holes in many buildings - a stark reminder of the snipers that lined the streets so recently -I dont think we can't begin to imagine how terrifying it was being shot at on a daily basis, and how normal life was just impossible. Its very rare I tear up during a DJ set - but the lyrics - especially of the Faithless music I played that night felt extra resonant - and extra urgent as many parts of the world seem to be plunging into a very hateful place! What are your current top 3 records right now? Like most of the world top Oz boy Fisher's "Losing It" is a dance floor weapon, The Chemical Borthers are back on form with " Free Yourself" and a lovely sunrise number called "Together" from R&D Are there any artists that you would recommend our readers check out? Really liking Circle Sky, also a rapper called Gaika, and on the pop side loving Christine & the Queens. Lastly, can you tell us some interesting or unusual story from your (over) 20 years of touring? (Our readers are pretty open minded, so no need to hold back) There are plenty I could tell you but what goes on tour, stays on tour! 7. In the lead up to their Australian tour and the release of their new album, Cut The Strings, Ozclubbers' @GALLEON chats with Booka Shade about their music, the album, and just life in general! We warmly welcome you both Arno & Walter back to Australia for your run of dates in March. You have frequented our shores regularly in the last 10 years. What is it that keeps bringing you back down under? Ever since we first came in 2007, we have found an enthusiastic and loyal fanbase who not only cherishes the classic tracks, but also embraces more recent songs such as LOVE INC . We played some of the biggest festivals such as big day out, future fest etc, but also enjoy the headline club shows, like Melbourne last weekend and the ones coming up in Brisbane, Auckland and Adelaide (during fringe festival) . As the new album is only coming out in a couple of weeks, we play a lot of unreleased album songs in Australia, and it´s great to see the reaction of the crowd. Your previous live shows have never disappointed and always left the listener wanting more. Can you let us in on a few secrets as to what we might experience this time around? I guess it´s not really a secret when I say that we simply LOVE performing on a stage. that´s what we are really good at (together with producing music I hope) . And on this tour, also because the sound of the album is more ´back to the club´, our setup is very condensed , we have all channels for synthesizers, effects, drums under control on stage, we can react quickly and can interact more spontaneously , which gives the set great energy . With your last album Galvany Street, you took a different approach to your previous albums, which included the use of more hardware and featured various collaborations. Does Cut The Strings have any similarities to Galvany Street or have you gone back to a predominantly club approach? After our 2013 album EVE we had the feeling that we had said everything in terms of bass lines and riffs. we had the feeling we would only repeat ourselves if we continued in our ´usual´ way, and as artists, we definitely always want to progress, evolve, not repeat. Which sounds risky, because we have a career we could perhaps simply continue for years and years. But that would be too easy …. :-) So on GALVANY STREET, we made an unusual step and produced an album outside of the techno box, no techno 4/4 beats , no ´booka synth riffs´ , a lot of vocals, even pop song writing. Most of the vocal tracks are together with Craig Walker, former member of the UK band ARCHIVE. btw he´s got a new project coming up called THEM THERE. We also collaborated with Fritz Hilpert from KRAFTWERK on a Dolby atmos mix of the entire album which was released as Blu-ray disc and is part of the Box Set we released. We needed this time out to recharge our club batteries and indeed, we found new inspiration for club music ! And now, with this new enthusiasm for the club, comes CUT THE STRINGS . After the galvany street the only guideline we had was that we wanna go back to more clubbier music and that we don‘t wanna work so crazy long on tracks as we did in the past.it should be more spontaneous and open minded. You have worked with Troels Abrahamsen (vocalist on Kolsch 'All That Matters') on your latest single and title track, Cut The Strings. How did you get to know Troels? We actually contacted him years ago, shortly after ´all that matters´, and recorded a first version of what would later become CUT THE STRINGS. But then the GALVANY STREET project came in between and we put the song aside for a while, and picked up work in the autumn of last year. One of the novelties of the album CUT THE STRINGS is that we worked much more spontaneous and finished the production process quicker. On previous albums we easily worked for 2, even 3 years on an album. Again, that´s something we wanted to change in 2018. With your latest live show, do you individually have specific functions within the show or do you collaborate on all aspects? The work spaces are clearly defined since we first started: Walter plays keyboards, vocoder, sequences, Arno plays the drums and whenever we play longer sets, he does a DJ part in the middle of the set. When writing Cut The Strings, did you find any tried and tested production techniques useful? We used some instruments that we didn‘t use for a long time , for example an old EMS vocoder which we bought from Ian Stanley a former member of the 80‘s group tears for fears. You can hear it on tyrell and of course EMS love.this little box has a very special sound. How much do you find your methods of producing music evolve with the vast amount of software and plugins available? Even if it is so easy nowadays to do a good sound with all the plug inns which are out there ,we‘re always looking for new sounds with a character which can help to improve the trademark sound of Booka Shade. Not easy but it‘s worth it. It‘s all about challenging yourself and not be stuck in a formula. How do you both remain resilient and at the top of your game while touring given the long hours and continual amount of work needing to be done to make your performances so memorable? We have a pretty good time management, considering we both have families and a lot of obligations aside of music. also, we live a rather healthy lifestyle lately, and it´s incredible how much you can get done in a day and how much more energy you can have even with little sleep. Looking into your back catalogue, you both have an extensive history as producers under various aliases and in several groups stretching back to the better part of 30 years. Would you ever consider reviving any of the older projects you both worked on together (for example Superstring)? Ha ha, you´re digging deep …… well not everything was gold , but having said that, most of the rights from the 90´s should have long fallen back to us, so you never know…. go listen to old demos and releases every now and then and then look for sounds and sequences on old hard drives. you can imagine, there are dozens of old computers and hard drives ... In the last few years you have set up Blaufield Music. Tell us a little about your label and its functions. We had founded the label Get Physical together with our friends M.A.N.D.Y. , DJ T. and Peter Hayo in the early 2000´s and left in 2008, so we needed a new outlet for our music. and every now and then we release songs from friends of ours, for example fellow berliner CHI THANH, who has produced a magnificent remix for Body Language btw). Could be that after the summer we´ll release a project of friends of ours from Melbourne. Within the music industry, you as individuals and collectively as Booka Shade are known for having a great reputation and being highly professional while always remaining humble. Are these qualities you would recommend any DJ, producer or musician should withhold in order to maintain longevity in the scene? Absolutely. most people who have been successful over a longer period of time (not just two summers) are very professional, work hard and stay grounded. Who would you say has inspired you the most musically over the last 30 years? Depeche mode, The Cure, New Order, Sven Vath Do you have any tips as to who is about to blow up in the next couple of years? ARTBAT from Ukraine are having a good run atm, look out for them. Finally, feel free to tell us a fun fact that we wouldn't know about Booka Shade. We love gardening in our free time. The group's next single, a surprising cover of the Bee Gees’ hit ‘Stayin’ Alive,’ was not only a massive international hit, but also featured a vocalist who would help define N-Trance's sound in the future, Ricardo da Force, formerly rapper with ‘The KLF.’ Upon its release in the UK it debuted at No. 2 and internationally it became one of the biggest UK exports of 1995, reaching no. 1 in Australia and being top 5 in a number of European charts. (featuring vocalist Simone Denny)(Broken Bones, You’re a Superstar, Here Comes the Sunshine) In 1997, Simone hooked up with DJ/producer Chris Sheppard to form the group Love Inc. Magic struck as their eponymous debut album went platinum. The CD spawned numerous hits including the mind-blowing ‘Broken Bones,’ (which cracked the top ten on the Canadian pop charts, hit #1 on the dance charts, and won a JUNO plus 2 Much Music Awards), and the wondrous ‘You’re A Superstar,’ (which became a #1 Dance song domestically as well as internationally in Australia and Spain). For co-writing the song ‘Who Do You Love,’ Simone earned a SOCANMusic Songwriter’s Award. This success brought about a remarkable tour for Love Inc., taking them all across Canada as well as into Europe. The turn of the millennium marked the release of Love Inc.’s second CD, ‘Into the Night.’ In 2001, their techno-pop single ‘Here Comes the Sunshine’ soared to the top of the Canadian dance charts, reached #3 in digital sales, and also received a JUNOand a Much Music award. Proving that anything can happen in the music industry, at the end of 2002 and into 2003, ‘You’re A Superstar’ and ‘Broken Bones’ were ecstatically embraced by the United Kingdom and Ireland. Both singles reached the top ten on radio play and dance charts. This prompted a brief Love Inc. reunion and a tour overseas.

  15. UK hip hop, electronic crossover act Foreign Beggars formed in 2002 and have seen an evolution as an underground hip hop group to electronic crossover act ever since. With multiple studio recordings under their belt and an always high-energy live show, the critically acclaimed group are well known as one of the UK’s most inexhaustible and versatile acts. Speaking with Ebow on the precipice of their Australian tour Ozclubbers were keen to hear about some of the band’s origins and of course, their sixth full length album: 2 2 KARMA. So you guys have been making music for a long time, can I ask a little bit about what the scene was like when you first started and how you’ve seen it evolve? The music scene is improving a lot more and the rap scene here is improving a lot more. You’ve got grime guys who are just hearing about the UK guys and the hip hop guys and visa-versa. Right now is a beautiful time to be a rapper in the UK. It’s been said that in the early days you started out by throwing drum and bass house parties and raves, can you tell me about that? Vulgatron and Dag Nabbit, who are the groups founding members yeah, they were throwing those parties in Dubai of all places. Then they both came to the UK and were initially making drum and bass. That is their origins and is why the band has such a tie with the Drum and Bass scene and has led to them being open minded about who they work with. They didn’t come from a straight hip hop scene. We were always willing to go to the parties and go to the raves and get involved and lend our voices and get involved. Basically lend our style to whatever style of music - be it drum and bass or house or whatever, we like to party, hip hop parties are a different vibe to a rave but the UK has a mad rave culture. Tell us about the new album? The new album is called “2 2 Karma”. It’s something we’ve been working on for a year and a half. It’s our first studio album in about 3 or 4 years. We wanted to return to our hip hop roots you know. I think a lot of people got confused because we were making a lot of dance music and that was us expressing an angle but this time we really thought about it and wanted to do a rap thing and be as varied as we could be. We have some great guests on it. We’ve got beats from Alix Perez, Flux Pavilion, Ivy lab, who’s doing some amazing stuff right now. Vocalists we worked with, John Post and Issy Gibbs, two young guys coming out of the grime scene that are doing amazing things. We worked with Kojey Radical who is a poet and a rapper and London Zoo, Black Josh and many many more. It’s a real special album for me. It’s got that good balance of social commentary, party stuff and vibey and we’re really looking forward to sharing it. Favourite track on the album? My favourite track on this album is The Mission produced by Bangsy. I love this tune! We really went there. It’s a real epic track. It’s a sik album and we’re real proud of it. The crew have released five studio albums to date: Asylum Speakers, Stray Point Agenda, United Colours Of Beggattron, The Uprising and I AM LEGION with Dutch production wizards Noisia. It is with great pride that they announce the completion and upcoming release of their finest work to date - their sixth full length album: 2 2 KARMA. With a top ten hit, over 80 million YouTube plays and a string of international headline dates ahead of them, things are going from strength to strength for the Beggars. Collaborative highlights from their past include Noisia, Dirtyphonics, Knife Party, Skrillex, Birdy Nam Nam, D’onaeo, Skinnyman, Jack Beats, Alix Perez, Tommy Lee, Eprom and Flux Pavilion. Not only was the group's eponymous 1996 debut popular, but the group could be heard on records by Bad Boy artists such as Puff Daddy. Unlike most artists on Bad Boy, 112's image was clean, pure and wholesome, which helped the group cross over to a more mainstream audience. The four members of 112 - Marvin, Daron, Q and Mike - met each other while attending high school in Atlanta, Georgia. Combs signed on as the executive producer of 112's eponymous debut album, which featured songs the group co-wrote with such professional songwriters as: Stevie J, Wayna Morris of Boyz II Men, and Combs himself. ‘Only You,’ the group's debut single, was released in the summer of 1996 and climbed to number three on the R&B charts, peaking at number 13 on the pop charts. 112 was released in late 1996 and it steadily worked its way to gold status as the group's second single, ‘Come Seem Me,’ reached number 15 on the R&B charts. Room 112 followed in 1998 and Part III was issued three years later. 24. In 2013, Swedish superstar Avicii was locked in as a headliner for Future Music Festival, alongside acts like The Prodigy, Boys Noize, and Zeds Dead. But a few days before he was due to take the stage at the festival’s first leg in Brisbane, organisers announced that the ‘Levels’ hitmaker would no longer be performing in the city or at the following event in Perth. FMF cited “stomach-related issues”, for which Avicii was hospitalised as soon as he landed in the country. Tim Bergling was also forced to cancel his lone Brisbane sideshow at The Met the following weekend, due to the severe ongoing illness. Bergling completed his Future shows in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, but his health issues continued to dog him — he cancelled his closing set at Ultra Music Festival a year later, then subsequently scrapped all of this remaining shows. Read More Watch DJs Open Up About Drug Addiction And Mental Health In This New Doco   Bergling has now shared intimate and confronting footage of just what happened behind-the-scenes of that fateful Australian tour, which makes up a short part of his just-released documentary True Stories. The 3-minute clip sees Bergling in a hospital bed, being advised by doctors in Brisbane that his gallbladder would have to be removed — and then a day later being asked by his tour manager about doing interviews for Future Music, all the while looking like he could pass out at any moment. It’s a sobering watch. Bergling — who retired from touring in 2016 — has spoken at length about his struggles with the mental and physical pressure of DJing, telling inthemix in 2013 that his constant drinking and partying had landed him in hospital back in 2012. He’s since made a comeback to dance music, releasing his Avīci (01) EP two months ago. He currently has no plans to return to the road. Watch the clip below.
