  1. If you’re into Trance music - you’ll know him. He’s signed to Armin van Buuren’s record label and a regular on the world’s biggest radio show ‘A State of Trance’. He’s played at Global Gathering, Creamfields, A State of Trance, Trancefusion, Transmission, Tomorrowland and Ultra Music Festival to name a few. His name is Andrew Rayel and I had the chance to chat to him recently about his thoughts on playing the smaller cities, the revival of Trance, and why a Trance crowd tops the rest. You’ve been making music since the age of 13. How’d you get into electronic music and manage to be releasing music at such a young age? It’s a very long story. I started by learning in musical school since I was 9 years old. I studied piano for 7 years and while I was studying piano I was never a big fan of learning other people’s music. That’s what they were making us do. We were learning Mozart and Choplin. I always wanted to create my own music. At that time I was learning to create different melodies on the piano but didn’t know how to record them. Or I didn’t know where I was going to go with them. Because with a melody you can go to any genre. You can create rock music, pop music, classic music or electronic music. They used to play some electronic music on the radio. That’s when I heard the music of Tiesto and Armin and ATB and I fell in love with that music and I decided this where I want my melodies to go. And it was another 5 or 6 years of working very intensely on production up until I got my first signing on a label. Then after that I signed one of my tracks to Armada Music and Armin really loved the track. They began playing all my tracks in his sets and the rest is history. It’s an amazing story. Were your parents behind you and pushing you at such a young age? Yeah totally. My Dad was not really into music and he didn’t understand it in the beginning. But my Mom always supported me and saw that I wanted to be a musician and a producer and later a DJ. She supported me and gave me everything. Even in the beginning, she borrowed some money so I could buy my first equipment for my studio. I think as soon as they see that it goes to something and you start earning a little money and getting recognition. Then they start to seeing it’s more serious and not a hobby or a waste of your efforts. Right now both my parents are into electronic music. Sometimes even more than me! What are your parents listening too? My mum listens to my radio show and the sets I’m playing but also to Tomorrowland sets. She always researches and listen to the music. She’s really into it. Your new track “Last Summer” has a much more commercial sound than you’ve had previously. There always seems to be a bit of a public outcry when an artist releases something that’s more commercial than usual. What can you tell your fans about this new sound? I can’t say this is my new sound and this is what to expect from me. This is just a track that we made to try out a more pop sound. At a certain point every artist wants to try certain things and new sounds and that’s what happened with this song. It was also a great collaboration with Garibay. We knew each other and ended up in the studio together. The production process was so fast. After 2 days we ended up with this and we realised “why not release it? It’s got great lyrics and a great meaning. There’s even going to be a club mix which will sound more like the Andrew Rayel you know with a Trancey sound. So all the fans don’t worry too much. I’m just going to try these things once in a while but my main focus is trance and electronic dance music and it will always be like that. What are your thoughts on the revival of Trance that seems to be happening now? Oh it’s great. I mean, different people see it in a different way but for me it’s great because it means there is more trance music and more tracks for me to play in my set. Obviously when there’s more trance music and more artists getting into it then the quality improves and it’s just awesome that there’s more of it. More to play on my radio show Find My Harmony! It’s great for me in general. I’m talking to you from one of the smaller Australian cities called Brisbane. We have a strong Trance following here but it’s much smaller than the larger cities. Around 500 people for a sold out event. Having played at so many legendary clubs and massive festivals do the smaller more intimate events still appeal to you or is it all in the hands of you’re booking agent at this point? I know Brisbane, I’ve been there many times. Yeah absolutely. We do smaller shows all the time. Obviously the agents prefer the bigger shows but I never want to miss out on the small clubs and small cities because there’s fans everywhere and not everyone has money to buy tickets to Sydney or Melbourne. I always want to please the fans so we’re doing our best to get out to the smaller cities. The energy most of the time is 3 times more intense because these people don’t get as many shows and they just go crazy and know all the tracks and sing along. I find a big difference between Techno, EDM or Trance crowds in their energy. Have you noticed this and what’s your favourite crowd to play to? Trance music itself is different and it tends to be more emotional and more melodic. So it brings more meaning and emotion than techno music which is more rhythmical. Or EDM which is more banging and rave type of music. Trance has more emotion to the melodies and this is why people connect faster and stronger to this music. You can see people crying and getting very emotional and that’s the crowd I love. Your level of production ability really grew in a few short years. What advice do you have for new producers when the market is overflowing with people trying to breakthrough? Production skills always grow. I’m constantly learning. I’m watching U-Tube Videos and reading things I try to always keep improving. This is my advice. Keep learning and researching and asking other producers questions. Watch tutorials online. We live one life and there will never be a time when you know everything. In the early stages you want find the sound you really like. Like an artist you really enjoy. Try to get as close to that sound as possible. Then you’ll learn the skills to do that. Then you’re ready for the next level which is finding your own sound that hasn’t been heard before. And this is what will take you to the next level. What DAW do you use and why? I use Q-Base. Probably 99% Q-Base 1% Ableton for small things. It doesn’t really matter what you use as long as you use it the right way. They’re pretty much built the same way and can do the same things. It’s a matter of comfort. What’s your favourite plugin? This is a hard one. I have so many favourite plugins! I love Silent, Zebra and Invisible Limiter. With Jake Torrey on vocals and a flurry of laidback grooves and catchy guitar plucks to boot, ‘Last Summer’ is bound to be the best one yet! About Andrew Rayel: He's the modern-day Mozart -- today's leading talent in the ever-growing electronic dance music scene. He's the pride of Moldova, known for his unique and very own sound. He is Andrei Rata, better known as Andrew Rayel. Born on July 21st, 1992, his young age never stopped him from taking the lead amongst the next generation of EDM producers. Developing strong musical skills, he studied orchestral music and kicked off his producing career at only 13 years of age. It didn't take long for the passionate music lover to translate his ideas into sounds. He created a truly unique sonic signature - one of piano power, harmonic balance, and euphoric tales. And so, years later, his originals and remixes are praised by many and loved by more. But, rest assured, the Andrew Rayel story has only just begun. “Trance was the perfect solution, as it is a combination of melody, harmony and energy, elements that I prefer the most," says Andrew Rayel. Having Armin van Buuren supporting his tracks on the world famous ‘A State of Trance’ radio show had always been a dream of Andrew’s. Sometimes, dreams come true. His tracks: '550 Senta,' 'How Do I Know' ft. Jano, 'Aeon of Revenge,' 'Once in a Lifetime Love,' ' My Reflections,' 'Horizon,' 'I’ll Be There,' ‘Dark Warrior,’ ‘One in a Million’ and much more all made it to the show, often voted ‘Tune of the Week’ and ‘Future Favourite.’ The trance scene embraced Andrew's refreshing sound, giving him a very warm welcome. Andrew’s tracks found a solid home on the ‘A State of Trance’ and ‘Armind’ labels, both part of the Armada Music family. With such impressive originals, it didn't take long until the Rayel sound became hot property for remixes. Andrew was lucky enough to take on remix duties for tracks by: Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, W&W, Dash Berlin and many more. Earning the support of the DJ elite, the Rayel sound has spread all across the globe, from underground clubs to mainstream festivals. Although Andrew’s career is still in its early stages, Andrew has already DJ’d at the world's most legendary clubs and massive festivals. From Kazantip, Global Gathering, Creamfields, A State of Trance, Trancefusion, Transmission, Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnivals, Ball En Blanc and much more. Not to forget performing and selling out world-wide venues such as: New City Gas, Exchange LA, Marquee New York, Ruby Sky San Francisco, Zouk Kuala Lumpur & Singapore, Colosseum in Jakarta, not to forget the magical Island ‘Ibiza’ in which he has performed at clubs such as: Ushuaïa, Amnesia, & Privilege and more, as well as earning a Las Vegas Residency at the age of 21 at Marquee Las Vegas. As a result of his hard work and dedication, fans voted him to become one of the Top 100 DJs in the world, as well as breakout DJ & Producer and highest climber in the poll voting, alongside many world-wide nominations such as the IDMA (International Dance Music Awards) which is hosted yearly in Miami during Winter Music Conference week. 2014 was the year that saw the first ever artist album from Andrew Rayel entitled: ‘Find Your Harmony’ which has taken the world by storm, alongside his sensational hit collaboration with Armin van Buuren: ‘EIFORYA.’ Andrew Rayel is now an artist that has released 2 artists albums on his home label ‘Armada Music.’ In 2014 ‘Find Your Harmony’ was released as the first ever artist album, followed up by ‘MOMENTS’ in 2017 and establishing his own record label under the Armada umbrella in 2018 with ‘inHarmony Music.’ The road to success has just begun and Andrew Rayel is ready to take on the world in the years ahead. 19. On the Trance Zone surge.

NEAR TWELVE p.m. we were back at camp changing clothes - feeling good, fully amping. Beyond our tents hundreds of good-cheer Gatherers flowed, sports fans on the march, pilgrims on the path - Mount Kailash, Shikoku, Varanasi - livers and lovers, dancers, all on the Trance Zone surge. We geared up, we joined, and we did not stop until caught by the Zone's rope cordon. Beside me Joseph, Sam and Big Dan, towering over us at six foot nine; and us part of a much larger rugged-up snug mob: people in a multitude of beanies, jackets and warm wool jerseys, some carrying umbrellas, some squatting down, news cameras present, clouds, steam; all just one huge homogenous yearn towards that empty, emerald field out front. The rain down, still coming down, but tolerable, perhaps even enjoyable, the heavier drops chubby and cool on your face, the lighter ones misting into a fine spray. A novelty. I mean how often are you outside, outdoors, and uncovered in rain really? Besides, electricity was in the air, we were on the verge of a thousand years, and no wet in the world could quench our fire, our barbarous souls at that time, in that place. Simmering. Anticipating. With restless intent. But not for long. Like artillery starting an attack enormous Japanese drums opened up with booming incantations. The chatter of the crowd went up to fever pitch. The first bass-ladened beats crack-ti-cracked the air; the crowd spiralled higher; the track something suitably singular, epic. We were barely contained, frothing against the rope. Time slowed, paused, ticked over. Twelve o’clock and the rope was down, down, down. The rope cordon was down and you couldn't help it, suddenly you were moving, shifting, straining with all of your might, running for the middle of the Trance Zone, bumping and jumping with your friends, with hundreds of others, running and shouting and hooping your delight; past the cameras, across the grass, through the rain; just one crazy pell-mell sprint for the centre for no other reason than it had begun. The music was here. And The Gathering had finally, truly begun. * * * * This blog is a story. Each post picks up from the last. If you want to stand out, you need to make your own records, write music, and make remixes and mashups for your DJ sets. I’m truly excited to share my passion for producing music and DJing in my MasterClass,” said Armin van Buuren, MasterClass instructor. “It’s the first time I get to show you my secrets and tips, and everything I’ve learned in my twenty years in this business.”   “Armin is an international icon of dance music. Despite his musical genius, he has stayed humble, hard-working, earnestly connected to his fans, and has never lost sight of the joy in his work. His passion for teaching is infectious. There really is an art and science to making people dance — it has to do with sculpting sound, mixing, and arranging songs for maximum impact — that’s Armin’s mastery, and he’s certainly one of the best to ever do it,” said David Rogier, CEO and Co-Founder of MasterClass. MasterClass is an online education company which provides classes from world-renowned instructors, making it possible for anyone to learn from the best. 10. Roger Shah first heard “Call Me Home” in 2014, during the closing minutes of Aisling Jarvis’ debut album “A Handful Of Bad Ideas”. One listen convinced him of its wider possibilities. Singer Aisling (daughter of Clannad’s Moya Brennan and niece of the equally legendary Enya) was already well on Roger’s radar. Having previously met and worked with Moya in 2011 (on ‘Morning Star’), over time he became friends with the family. Subsequently he got early wind of Aisling’s rising talent and on hearing “Call Me Home” reached out again to venture a new collaboration. Roger & Aisling’s more dance orientated revision came to rapid fruition, seeing first light as the opening track on “Magic Island: Music For Balearic People Vol. 6“. Since it has become a mainstay of his live sets and by virtue, one of his most requested tracks. Up until this point though, the German producer has been reluctant to release it as a single. The final tipping point for this came at the end of summer 2017, whilst he was remix-revisiting ‘Call Me Home’ for his ‘Beach Grooves Vol.1’ album. Having completed a deep house High Noon At Salinas treatment, his mind was still alight to other remix potentials for it. The upshot of that is that “Call Me Home” – complete with two exceptional new reworks, finally arrives as an official single today. At the outset of Roger’s Club interpretation, he dubs Aisling’s intro harmonies over the top of robust bass and a floor-minded tempo. Drop-side, in tandem with its elevating synths, her chorus is looped & advanced into a crowd-rousing refrain. The percussion-led original version forms the basis for Roger’s Extended Mix. Now given a more dominant orchestral drum bedrock, Roger fleshes it out into an epic 9 + minute odyssey. Sequence by fascinating sequence, he draws on an ever-expanding range of Celtic notes, inflections and instrumentations – flutes, citterns and Uilleann pipes among them – to accentuate the hailing Gaelic tones of Aisling’s song. 13. When reflecting upon the early roots of trance music in the early nineties, a key pioneer of this music we love was the duo of Jam El Mar and the late Mark Spoon. In 1994, they released the single ‘Find Me’, but little were they to know that the record’s B-Side would go on to become one of the most cherished of all time – the timeless ‘Odyssey To Anyoona’. Coldharbour Recordings is both delighted and honored to welcome the legendary figure of Jam El Mar to its family of artists. In doing so, they are also incredibly proud to introduce ‘Odyssey To Anyoona’ to the modern- day generation. Following a summer visit to Frankfurt, Markus Schulz struck an immediate rapport and chemistry with Jam in his home city. There they embarked on rekindling the magic of the original, which is beloved by so many. Surrounded by an energetically hypnotic 140bpm outer layer, the core remains intact, harnessing the beautiful soul of angelic and emotionally driven tones. Debuted to rapturous appraisal at Nature One, Germany’s leading dance music festival, it created a moment for both Jam and Markus to share for a lifetime. And to compliment the energy of the Markus Schulz vs. Jam El Mar outlay, maestro Jamie Stevens teams up with Uone for a tantalizingly, laid-back, deep house affair; oozing class whether played early in the morning or the evening. For the veterans out there, the revival of ‘Odyssey To Anyoona’ will be a fond trip down memory lane to reminisce. And for the new generation, embrace it and fall in love with its beauty. 14. “Not so straightforward, is it?” observes Markus Schulz. Both generally and rhetorically, he’s passing comment on life. However, in the closing weeks of 2017 & opening months of 2018, he could as easily be talking about the ‘how’, ‘what’ & ‘why?’ of Dakota’s stage show and its December-released 18-track LP companion, The Nine Skies. Dakota has had its spiritual side from the off. The first and second ‘Thoughts Become Things’ albums were the pathfinders for this new, and possibly most definitive of Dakota projects. These releases were measures deployed to see if electronic music’s citizenry were receptive to something deeper and more involved. Word back from the ‘Thoughts’ generation was: “ready”. The tipping point for The Nine Skies’ didn’t occur however until last year, and the aftermath of the attack on Florida’s Pulse nightclub. “The final spur in the side”, was how Markus saw it at the time. “All the shit that’s happened after that has really changed things, but somehow that all seemed to start with Pulse. It just devastated me. Shook me to my core. It woke me up to the idea that, in general, we’re not on the right path. I believe to get us back there, to turn things around, anyone who is able has to do their bit. The Nine Skies is me trying to do mine in really the only way I know how”. In respect of ‘The Nine Skies’, Markus’ own awakening started predominantly through books. “I started reading, he says, like a lot!” “At home, in hotel lobbies, on flights, in the studio. I’ve always had a lingering interest in spirituality and the desire to make some sense of life. It’s something I share with people that are close to me. We like to chat about the nature of things like dharma, prajna, true-self – all that stuff. It is how – over time – the ‘Skies’ came into being. Markus has always seen Dakota not as an alias but as a persona – an identity even. “Sometimes I’m wearing Dakota’s head; other times it’s Markus Schulz’s, he says. Through that division, I’ve found the artistic space to make darker, moodier, deeper music. More exploratory and experimental gear… if that’s where my current state of mind is taking me. Atypically, the entire The Nine Skies project – concept, show, album, et al, was wrapped and complete before but a word of it was breathed. “This, expands Markus, gave me an opportunity I’d not had before. It gave me a chance to shake up my usual release pattern. So in keeping with the progressive spirit of The Nine Skies/steps, rather than coming with dozens of shows and an album’s worth of new material frontend, I brought it one stage and single at a time. I felt it would give the audiences more time to digest and absorb what is undeniably a broader concept”. Markus considers that if there’s one thing enlightenment does take, it’s time. ”Rarely, if ever, in life does something happen overnight”, he says. The release of the album’s first four singles was designed to reflect one of the possible journey arcs from darkness to enlightenment. That started with early-in-the-album track, ‘Mota Mota’ and ended with its penultimate one, ‘Spirit of the Warrior’. “It arches from one of the most ominous darkly-minded, night-black numbers I’ve written to possibly Dakota’s most uplifting, emancipating moment ever”, says Markus. The underlying theme of each of the 18 tracks on the album broadly falls into one of the Skies’ nine realms. “That, cautions Markus, is not something that’s going to be immediately apparent the first time you listen to it. Give it time though, and over subsequent spins I think, you’ll get an ever-greater feel for the transitional passage the album is taking. From Sky.One’s The Follower, transcending right the way over to the ninth Sky: Nirvana.” Tracklist 01. The Nine Skies Intro 02. Bravo on the Go 03. Follow Me 04. Mota-Mota 05. Who Are You 06. Chris Bekker – You

Few if any producers these days connect progressive and trance music more intuitively and completely than Chris Bekker. With his latest release though, we here at VANDIT towers think he may have outdone even himself. The source of our conviction is the singular ‘You’ – a career-best piece of music, cut from the finest progressive-trance elements and produced down to the last sonic detail. Through its formative minutes, Chris interlocks a collage of four distinct sub-melodies, each of which play a critical part in developing the track’s early atmospheres. Atop its cruising bass line, he applies floor-engaging FX, pinpoint-timed chord progressions and beguiling, chiming melodics – all of which further its unique ether. ‘You’s coup-de-grace moment though comes through its female vocal – a hailing, heaven-sent siren-song, the subtle rapture of which is quite impossible to resist. 21. Rafael Osmo caps off his release year in the same exalted fashion he started it… with a club-combusting outing on VANDIT Records! Rewind back to January and through “Bella Monaco“, the Israeli served electronic music lovers with one of 2017’s earliest floor beacons. Now he bookends the year by pouring all the same studio smarts & nous into the twin productions of “Euphoria” and “Remind Yourself”. First out of the gate is “Euphoria”, which – title-wholly-appropriate, is the more elevating of the pair. Tough of drum and boisterous of bass, Rafael grafts layer upon layer of uplifting synths & strings into its production foundation, cementing them in place with detailed FX flourish. Swinging the needle over towards the more soul-stirring end of trance’s scale, “Remind Yourself” instinctively favours longer, more emotive note structures. With minor melodies, sub-riffs and chord & pads movements that’ll pull the heartstrings aplenty, its mainline finally sweeps in to make it two-for-two. 23. Grotesque by name, though more striking and energetic in nature, RAM’s vision of trance could scarcely be more uplifting. Powered by his unswerving studio, DJ and event work, the Dutchman has long since forged his own sound for the genre. Ever wondered though what the trance classics of yesteryear would sound like, had they been produced in the Grotesque times of today? Well wonder no more! Available as of today, RAM’s has compiled and mixed the very first Grotesque Reworked and Remixed compilation. Mix 1 consists of Reworked tracks only, projecting some of trance’s perennially fresh classics through Grotesque’s own, unique sonic prism. Highlights are Salt Tank’s masterpiece Eugina reworked by Ciaran McAuley; RAM’s reworks of Ahmed Romel – City of Life and Derb – Derbus, an Idecent Noise take on Mark Norman’s Phantom Manor and chart-topping Stoneface & Terminal Remix of Mr Sam’s Lyteo. Wandering into Remixed territory on Mix 2, RAM has selected fresh takes on classics and the current tunes of today. With new life blown into tracks like Tiësto featuring Christian Burns – In The Dark by First State, Dogzilla – Without You by Will Atkinson and an LTN Remix of RAM’s own Guiding Star featuring Clare Stagg, there’s plenty of Remixed to go around. Dutch DJ and producer Ram Boon, a.ka. RAM, was born March 2, 1974, in Amsterdam. His first big single was RAMsterdam (2009) which eventually ended up on Armin van Buuren‘s list of favorite tracks of the year. RAM continued producing singles like RAMazing(2011), RAMbition and RAMplify (2012); where combining the track titles with his name started as a joke, it later became as a trademark for his uplifting tracks. His latest album Forever Love (Black Hole Recordings, 2015) was received with critical acclaim and grabbed the #6 spot on Trancepodium 2015 Awards, category Best Artist Album. 24. In perhaps the most time-honored tradition in 20+ years of event theme history, this November sees Markus Schulz deliver Transmission its 2017 night-defining anthem. First marking his ambassadorship of the Prague-based arena colossus with ‘The New World’ back in 2008, this year’s composition represents Markus’ ninth consecutive Transmission theme in as many years. 2017’s theme also serves a dual role, as ‘The Spirit Of The Warrior’ dovetails into Markus 2017 Dakota spectacular, ‘The Nine Skies’. Through his audiovisual undertaking, Schulz has embraced a unique musical, spiritual path to enlightenment throughout the year. Forming an integral piece of this journey, ‘The Spirit Of The Warrior’ represents the fourth trailblazing single (or ’Sky’) ahead of the project’s upcoming album. Musically, through dramatically drawn strings, big orchestral drums, majestic symphonic supporting instrumentation and laser-lit synths, Markus again encapsulates the sense of spectacle and occasion that is Transmission. In Prague on November 25th, through ‘The Spirit Of The Warrior’, Transmission, Dakota and ‘The Nine Skies’ will meet as one. Tracklist 01.
