  14. It’s official – Twitter is bumping up the character limit for all users to 280 characters. Since its inception, Twitter has limited its users to 140 characters; however, since beta testing the new cap with select users, Twitter has seen more likes, retweets, mentions, and followers go to those users. This could, of course, be due to the special nature of those users and the fact that they had something that others didn’t. It will be interesting to see what happens when all users have the function available for use. As Syndrome says, “When everyone’s super, no one is.” Don’t worry if you can’t do it immediately, a company spokesperson cautioned that it could take up to two hours to take effect in all apps around the world. 19. The reviews are in and Will Smith x DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s “Get Lit” is most definitely not lit… Deep down, we all cling to the hope that the once Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was coming from an authentic place when he made the track, but even if that’s true, it didn’t translate well. “Get Lit” has turned out to be the most generic and unlistenable release of the year with no other contenders in sight. What’s been described as “dad-like,” “cookie-cutter EDM” and a “total absurdity” is getting ripped apart by music critics across the board. It stings like salt in a deep cut on our hearts — wounds caused because we know the greatness heard with Big Willie Style might not ever make a comeback. Smith recently revealed he has 30 more tracks with Jazzy Jeff — so let’s hope they can redeem themselves. “Get Lit” Gets Absolutely Savage Reviews Across the Board “[Get Lit] is pretty cookie-cutter EDM as far as arrangement and production. It’s got some heavy kicks and staggered synth stabs, with a typical hook in “get lit”… honestly, the song could have been good if Smith and Jazzy Jeff put some more sincere effort into it. As it stands, it really just seems like a bandwagon song with them trying to get some street cred with the young kids.” – Matt Meadow, Your EDM “It was endearing when Smith rapped about how parents just don’t understand in 1988, but in 2017, hearing a 49-year-old talk about getting ‘lit’ comes off as a Steve Buscemi, ‘How do you do, fellow kids?’ moment.” – Derrick Rossignol, Uproxx “The Wild Wild West movie of Will Smith singles – a frankly f**king mental genre leap that’s actually kinda fascinatingly s**t, rather than the Collateral Beauty of Will Smith singles (just plain sh**). Jaden needs a better password on his laptop, because I am one billion per cent his dad, in actual Yer Da mode, raided his Tidal (Jaden is definitely a Tidal guy), found the playlist titled ‘Major Lazer is doooope!!!!!!!!’ then searched his Facebook inbox for hip young phrases-cum-song titles.” – Al Horner, Fact Mag “The real tragedy here is not that the song is bad, which it is. It’s that Smith may be attempting to relive his younger days by updating his party raps and adopting what he thinks the kids will embrace. He doesn’t need to do this, is the weird part, as he definitely doesn’t require the cash nor does he need the cultural cache. What we have is just a man flailing needlessly against the riptide of time.” – Phil Witmer, Noisey “The total absurdity of Get Lit renders it not only hilarious, but, in a way, the most profound music Will Smith has ever made. Its vacancy is so pure that it verges on the existential, the mystical – perhaps even the divine, for only a god could be capable of such perfect lack of meaning.” – Frank Guan, Vulture “Christ. You know it’s bad if I, a dad, think something is too dad-like. Was this mixed inside a tractor engine? Join us next week when Will drops his next three songs, Woke AF, YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, and [prayer emoji].” – Drew Magary, GQ “It’s official. ‘Lit’ is no more. Not when old man Will Smith is building sh**ty, deafening EDM songs around the millennial buzzword.” – Randall Colburn, Consequences of Sound “It’s not as desperate as MC Hammer suddenly going gangster, or as out of left field as Bob Dylan rapping with Kurtis Blow, but it’s pretty close to your dad turning up Look What You Made Made Do and doing the Dougie in front of your friends at your bar mitzvah.” – Alex McLevy, AV Club   Source: NZ Herald | Photo via Livewire Festival This article was first published on Your EDM. 20. The reunited Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff have shocked fans everywhere as the nostalgic pair takes on EDM! Their first effort “Get Lit” doesn’t lack enthusiasm, but definitely limits itself with the straight up fist-pumping beat and predictable progression that tends to raise more eyebrows than hands. But as it turns out, there’s plenty more where the somewhat inspired, yet totally generic “Get Lit” came from. Will Smith reveals he and Jazzy Jeff are sitting on roughly “30 new songs” together. And deep down we know that his 1997 Big Willie Style self wouldn’t stand for the type of cookie-cutter production at work with “Get Lit.” There has to be some hits in there, right? Soon enough, we’ll know — because 30 songs sounds a lot like an album should be in the works. 21. Earlier this year, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff announced they would be making a rare appearance to perform at Blackpool’s Livewire Festival. At the August festival, the duo tried their hand at EDM with the premiere of a track called “Get Lit.” “Get Lit,” produced by DJ Jazzy Jeff, shows the iconic duo trying to push their way into one of the world’s fastest-rising music cultures. With a party vibe about “getting lit” and a pounding big room house beat, the track is reminiscent of festivals five years ago. Smith dons an accent for the verses in an attempt to give the song a foreign vibe, but switches back to his recognizable rap voice for the chorus. In the hours since its release, the track has been met with overall criticism, with descriptions varying from “atrocious” to “a nightmare” to a “mid-life crisis.” While 49-year-old Smith and 52-year-old DJ Jazzy Jeff are legendary in the music world, their efforts to connect with the EDM audience miss the mark with “Get Lit.” Read More: Will Smith & DJ Jazzy Jeff debut ‘Get Lit’ at Blackpool’s Livewire Festival Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff to reunite for rare show Will Smith is making a hip-hop comeback with DJ Jazzy Jeff Source: Dancing Astronaut
  22. It seems that even megastars like Will Smith aren’t immune to the gravitational pull of EDM, as he’s just officially released his new original song “Get Lit.” The track, originally revealed at Livewire Festival with Jazzy Jeff, is pretty cookie-cutter EDM as far as arrangement and production. It’s got some heavy kicks and staggered synth stabs, with a typical hook in “get lit”… honestly, the song could have been good if Smith and Jazzy Jeff put some more sincere effort into it. As it stands, it really just seems like a bandwagon song with them trying to get some street cred with the young kids. When Smith introduced the song at Livewire, he said, “I wanted to make a song that allowed people to let their light shine. We all have an inner light and sometimes this world… people can say stuff to you and tell you you can’t do and you know you can but when they tell you that it kinda knocks you down a bit right so I wanted to make a record that reminded each and every one of y’all to let your light shine.” I’m not really sure where that sentiment went, because it’s definitely not present in the production. 24. Australia was poised to take a step in an unprecedented direction with the establishment of the country’s first pill testing initiative at a festival. The effort was set for its first deployment Canberra’s Spilt Milk music festival, though it has now been cancelled. The trial was previously approved by The Labor Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government in September after the ACT engaged in talks with the Safety Testing Advisory Service at Festivals and Events (STA-SAFE) consortium. The consortium had agreed to take on the responsibility for running and supervising the testing service. And yet, despite the ACT and STA-SAFE’s prior negotiations, organizers of the Spilt Milk festival released a statement that noted that they had not received the documentation from STA-SAFE that would permit the trials to be run on federal land. In order for the trials to proceed, Spilt Milk producers would need an operational plan, a risk assessment, and insurance and legal framework information. With the proper documentation in their possession, festival orchestrators would then be able to submit the paperwork to the National Capital Authority (NCA), the body that would then need to issue a permit to allow the trials to run. Without this documentation, a permit could not be obtained, and the trials would halt before even getting a chance to get started. STA-SAFE member, Dr. David Caldicott told ABC Radio that STA-SAFE had not fielded a request for such documentation, commenting that the group has “…provided every piece of documentation that has been requested.” Caldicott gestured towards political pressure, identifying such pressure as the likely culprit in the trials’ failure to advance. The ACT Liberal Party’s health spokeswoman, Vicki Dunne, was quoted in August stating “The Spilt Milk festival is at Commonwealth Park, which is on Commonwealth (federal) land. Pill testing will need Commonwealth Government approval and I doubt that they will give it.” The ACT Liberal Party has since taken credit for thwarting the pill testing plans.
